WHAT IS ACCREDITATION ??

Accreditation is the formal recognition that an organisation is competent to perform specific processes, activities, or tasks (which are detailed in a scope of accreditation) in a reliable credible and accurate manner.  The provision of accreditation must:

  • Be objective, transparent and effective
  • Use highly professional competent assessors and technical experts in all relevant fields;
  • Use assessors (and subcontractors) that are reliable, ethical and competent in both accreditation processes and the relevant technical fields.

Accreditation delivers confidence in certificates and conformity statements. It underpins the quality of results by ensuring their traceability, comparability, validity and commutability.

The accreditation process ensures that their certification practices are acceptable, typically meaning that they are competent to test and certify third parties, behave ethically and employ suitable quality assurance.

Board of Directors

The board of directors is responsible for facilitating communication about accreditation programs, recommending creation of new accreditation programs, and providing annual budget approval. Members of the board represent stakeholders and include technical experts and industry and government representatives.

WHO CAN BE ACCREDITED

The accreditation period is typically four years. During that period, there is ongoing surveillance, which includes an annual office assessment and an annual witnessed audit. A complete reassessment is required every four years. Increased surveillance may required if the CB wishes to extend the scope of accreditation (as applicable) to cover additional industry sectors or to participate in certain specialty fields. If a CB becomes accredited for additional standards, the reaccreditation cycle may be aligned for all standards and the accreditation period for the added standards may be less than four years.
